In a city that constantly suffers from power outages amid storms, the Christmas lights on Avenida Paulista have caught the attention of locals and tourists visiting São Paulo. In recent days, it has become common to see people taking out their cell phones and recording the decorations of the places.
One of the main innovations this year was the installation of light arches along the cycle path, which gave a “boost” to the Christmas effect. With blinders everywhere, many people took the opportunity to take selfies.
The concern, however, is the risk of accidents due to pedestrians traveling on the bicycle lane, which required a compromise between the parties. It is also advisable to be careful when posing in front of the smartphone camera, as the avenue is one of those with the most cell phone thefts in the capital of São Paulo.
Enthusiastic audience
This Tuesday (16/12), even the light drizzle after another storm did not dampen the enthusiasm of those who went to the site, where even a giant Santa Claus did not stay still after a windstorm last week. Even though some decorations went out, like in front of Masp, and even the traffic lights turned flashing yellow, many people looked for the best place to take their souvenir photos. For these people, everything is good to ward off the “Grinch” that can exist in everyone.
Three colleagues were returning from the company’s end-of-year party and decided to stop to take selfies near Paulista and Rua Augusta, one of the brightest places.
“I liked it a lot, because the daily routine is very chaotic and these lights give hope, joy. That’s what Christmas is. When we leave and we see it, it gives us an inner boost. It reminds us of fatigue, but it brings the magic of the end of the year,” said Camila Alzira, 23, human resources employee.
“It makes you want to stop and take a selfie with your friends,” said Júlia Vitória, 25, a human resources manager.
For Yasmim de Lima Dias, 21, who accompanied his friends, the feeling is one of nostalgia. “It’s pretty cool,” he said.

Student Laura Azanha, 22, was riding a scooter on the Paulista cycle path and approved of the special lighting. “I’ve seen the decorations over the years and this year it’s really cool, here in Paulista and other places too. I think it’s really cool.”

For Laura, it’s an opportunity for people to go to the avenue. “They created bus routes to visit, which makes people appreciate the decoration,” he says.
