To express the feeling of what the new year represents, the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade once wrote that “he who had the idea of cutting time into slices, what we called the year, was an individual of genius” by allowing the miracle of renewal that “everything begins again, with another number and another desire to believe.”
In 2026, there will be a specific renewal of the figures of those who make the calculations to retire via the INSS (National Institute of Social Security).
The requirements for taking into account age and contribution period will be increased, in order to somehow delay the intentions of those who are about to retire. Provided for in the Social Security reform carried out by constitutional amendment no. 103, certain transitional rules will be adjusted automatically from January 1, 2026.
They apply to workers who were already contributing before November 2019, but who will not be able to retire until later.
The first of these is the transitional rule called progressive minimum age, according to which the minimum retirement age increases gradually each year. In 2026, women will have to be 59 years and six months and men 64 years and six months.
In addition to the minimum age, in both cases it is also necessary to respect the contribution period: 30 years and 35 years for women and men, respectively.
The other transition rule which will be modified in 2026 is that of the points system, which is the sum of age and contribution time, fractions included, equivalent to 93 points, if it is a woman, and 103 points, if it is a man.
Points are taken into account for each year of social security contributions paid to the INSS as well as for each year of aging. To benefit from this rule, you must have at least 30 years of contributions (woman) and 35 years of contributions (man).
Teachers who wish to retire through the INSS will also undergo changes. Under the General Social Security Scheme, teachers in basic education, such as preschool, primary and secondary education, have the right to early retirement.
The rules for the points system and progressive minimum age are similar to those for other workers. The difference is that in teacher calculations, the requirements are reduced by five years due to the difficult nature of the profession.
The minimum age transition rule for the teacher requires: 54 years and six months plus 25 years of effective teaching for the teacher, while the man must be 59 years and six months, plus 30 years of effective teaching.
In the case of the point system rule, the teacher will have to reach 88 points, with at least 25 years of teaching and 63 years of age. The teacher must achieve the target of 98 points, including 30 years of teaching and 68 years of age.
These transitional rules will only stop increasing in 2033, when the annual changes planned in the Social Security reform will stabilize.
Despite the scenario of constantly worsening requirements of our regulatory system, many policyholders are unaware of information that can accelerate retirement eligibility.
Periods worked without mention of a professional card, and subsequently recognized by the Labor Council, are generally not recorded at the INSS. In certain cases, it is possible for the defaulting insured, provided that he can prove that he has worked, to compensate for the social security contributions not collected at the appropriate time.
Anyone who worked in an unhealthy or dangerous manner until November 2019 can increase their working hours, with an increase of 40% for men and 20% for women.
At a time when retirement rules are becoming more and more difficult, it is important for the insured to review the professional particularities that accelerate the retirement process. After all, the days Drummond described of the end of the year as just an industrialization of hope are over. In terms of retirement, the passage of time today reduces the hope of retiring in certain cases.
