Teresa Peramato has assumed this important position as the state’s general fiscal officer. And there he is surrounded by several of his predecessors, including Álvaro García Ortiz, who attended his first public act after being convicted for revealing secret data from the Supreme Court that disqualified him from this position. He addressed his successor with his first words: “I want to publicly express my recognition, my respect, my admiration and my gratitude to my immediate predecessor and my love to my entire family. Thank you!”, a mention that provoked applause from a large part of the guests at the event which was celebrated at the headquarters of the Fiscalía General.
As you saw during his appearance before the Justice Commission of Congress, Peramato admitted that the criminal proceedings that ended with the conviction of García Ortiz opened “a deep legacy that crossed the Spanish Fiscalía and that must be healed.” “I hope that it will have lowered my direction and with the effort of each and every inspector of this country. I count with you”, expressed the new head of the Public Ministry, who gave special mention to the Fiscal Council, the main advisory body of the General Fiscal, and to the Junta de Fiscales de Sala, the highest category of the career.
The sectors of both agencies maintained strong confrontations with García Ortiz and his successor who wanted to highlight and extended his hand as “essential pillars in the institutional architecture of the Public Ministry” and “fundamental for strategic decision-making”. “My commitment is to listen, to dialogue and to build together. Because Fiscalía is not a character: it is a collective, a community. A shared mission”, said Peramato, who is the one who has dedicated a large part of his career.
In this act, besides García Ortiz, he assisted several inspectors general, both from the government of Mariano Rajoy, such as Eduardo Torres-Dulce and Consuelo Madrigal, as well as other predecessors of Peramato appointed by the leaders of Pedro Sánchez, María José Segara and Dolores Delgado. “Assuming the position of director of the Ministry of Finance is the greatest commitment of my professional life. A training course and five years of service in this institution, which has been my home, my vocation and my reason for being,” said the new head of the Fiscalía, who was moved to express his thanks to his husband and sons. His mother, Irene, has been 91 for many years and was unable to witness the act, but she was cited by Peramato as a “precious and leading” woman.
Peramato announced that his right-hand man will now be the fiscal superior of the Balearic Islands, Julio Cano Antón, who has been appointed fiscal de sala head of the Technical Secretariat.
