Perry BamonteGuitarist who was part of The Cure in the ’90s and returned to the band at the beginning of this decade, He died this Friday, December 26th, after a short illness. He was 65 years old.
The news was confirmed by The Cure’s official website. “Quiet, intense, intuitive, consistent and wildly creative, ‘Teddy’ has been a heartfelt and important part of The Cure’s story.“After working with the group in the second half of the 1980s, he became a regular member of The Cure in 1990 and played guitar, six-string bass and keyboard on ‘The Wish’, ‘Wild Mood Swings’, ‘Bloodflowers’, acoustic hits and The Cure albums, giving more than 400 concerts in 14 years.”
“He returned to The Cure in 2022 and played a further 90 concerts, some of the best in the band’s history, culminating in London on November 1, 2024. Our deepest condolences go out to his entire family. We will miss him very much“, says the statement.
Bamonte was born in London in 1960 and grew up in Basildon. Thanks to his brother Daryl, who served as the group’s tour manager, Bamonte joined the band’s team in 1984. He initially worked as a personal assistant to singer Robert Smith and over the years worked out a place on stage after the departure of keyboardist Roger O’Donnell.
He left the group in 2005 after Robert Smith reformed them as a trio. In 2012, Bamonte joined Love Amongst Ruin and returned to The Cure when the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. In 2022, Perry was part of the tour Shows of a Lost World through Europe and the following year through the United States and South America.
