Perry Bamonte, guitarist for The Cure, turned 65 on Christmas Day. His death was confirmed by the band themselves, who released a statement on their website recalling that he was “a warm and vital part of the history” of the group.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of our great friend and bandmate Perry Bamonte, who passed away following a brief illness at his home during the Christmas holidays,” the statement said.
Bamonte (London, 1960) joined the British rock band as a full member in 1990. He plays guitar, six-string bass and keyboard on The Cure’s iconic albums: wish (1992), Wild mood swings (1996), Boudoir flowers (2000), Acoustic successes (2001) and The remedy (2004). “He gave more than 400 concerts in 14 years,” the group remembers.
The guitarist had been part of The Cure’s crew since their 1984 tour. Bamonte was the personal and technical assistant to Robert Smith, singer and frontman of the group.
Bamonte left the group in 2005, when Smith decided that The Cure would be a trio, although he rejoined in 2022 to play another 90 shows. “Some of the best in the band’s history,” the release said. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to his entire family. He will be greatly missed.”
