On December 10, 2025, the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, chaired a new Council of Ministers in which he discussed drug trafficking and security problems in the territory.
In his speech, the head of state pointed out that most of the cocaine leaving the country goes through the ports, which is why he called on his cabinet ministers to improve controls in the port areas as a strategy.

“Cocaine is transported more across the Pacific than across the Caribbean. It is transported more by merchant fleets than by boats. The boats only serve as a means of transport for the ships. Port control is essential.” and global and American policing coordination is needed,” Petro said.
In return, he spoke about the US warnings against military intervention in Colombian territory due to high cocaine production. The Colombian President and his counterpart Donald Trump are not aware of his government’s measures in the fight against drugs.
“Trump is a very uninformed man in Colombia. It’s a shame because he destroyed the country that knows the most about cocaine trafficking.” It seems that his interlocutors are completely deceiving him,” he said.
However, he said he followed the advice of his staff and would not retaliate against Trump if he became involved in a confrontation.
“I wanted to respond to Trump, everyone tells me not to do it because I only complicate things. I make my situation even more confusing, but I think I should explain to people what is happening,” the Colombian leader said.
And he added: “This terrible misinformation towards the President of the United States leads him to phrases and actions that cannot be used against a democratically elected President. I have different opinions about the US government’s policies regarding Palestine, migrants, the Caribbean, Venezuela and the effectiveness of the fight against mafias. I hope that Trump comes to Colombia to see how drug labs are seized by the tons.”
During his speech, Petro spoke about the bombings in the Caribbean against boats transporting drugs to the United States. In his opinion, the fight against drugs should be based on dismantling drug traffickers, not on murdering innocent people like the fired boatmen.
“When the boatmen are poor people and there is no international sea in the Caribbean. Negotiating with drug traffickers is the responsibility of justice, not governments. If we save deaths, that’s better, but the goal is dismantling.” Cocaine capital no longer enters Colombia; it is in the international financial system. With the coordination of police intelligence services, we can seize them. Because of these mafia ideas, they threaten my daughters and my family. I don’t want US presidents to support these threats. I fought the drug trade for two decades and am miraculously alive. Now I see these gangsters going to the United States to spread misinformation,” the president said.

As for security, he assured that his government had evidence that paramilitary groups such as Convivir were resurgent in Colombia. He took the opportunity to take action against Santiago Uribe, the brother of former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, whom the judiciary had sentenced to 28 years in prison for links to illegal armed groups.
“We have recovered all the information archived by Convivir that I reported on in a debate on paramilitarism in Antioquia in 2027, which still has consequences that incriminate the brother of a former president.” But collecting these files, army generals appear to be linked to this issue and were not mentioned by name on Caracol TV. This deserves a thorough investigation,” he concluded.
