Announced as Internacional’s new coach for the 2026 season, Paulo Pezzolano arrives in Beira-Rio with the mission of rebuilding the team after a year marked by instability and the risk of relegation. The contract signed with the club, however, includes a specific clause which allows termination in the event of a proposal from the Uruguayan team.
The coach has never hidden his desire to manage Celeste and usually includes this possibility in his contracts. In an interview with Radio El Espectador, from Uruguay, Pezzolano explained that this clause is a norm in his career, but wanted to emphasize that it is not an attempt to make himself available to the Uruguayan federation.
This care, according to the coach himself, implies the respect he has for Marcelo Bielsa, current commander of the Uruguayan national team. Pezzolano expressed his admiration for his compatriot’s work and said he hoped Uruguay would have a good World Cup in 2026.
Meanwhile, the coach is fully focused on Internacional. After a turbulent 2025 season, during which the club only confirmed its stay in Serie A on the last day of the Brazilian Championship, Pezzolano will be responsible for reorganizing the squad, regaining the trust of the group and managing a locker room which has faced internal problems throughout the year.
This will be the Uruguayan’s second experience in Brazilian football. Between 2022 and 2023 he captained Cruzeiro and was responsible for bringing the club back to Serie A, a job that has accredited his return to the country now to try to bring Inter back to a more competitive level.
