The leader of the Liberal Party in the Federal Senate, Carlos Porteño, classified the opinion issued by the Attorney General of the Federation, Jorge Mesías, as a “trick”, contrary to the decision of Gilmar Méndez, which states that only the Attorney General of the Republic has the authority to initiate impeachment proceedings for STF ministers.
When asked in the column on Thursday (4/12), Carlos Porteño replied: “I see a play and a theatrical. One raises the ball and the other cuts it. This is known in sports. The STF and its friends from the PGR and the AGU are playing with the Senate. Therefore, it is time for the Senate to put an end to this. I hope that the President (of the Senate) Alcombre will take a very tough stance on all this ‘deception that I love’ and this theatrics.”

As for Bolsonaro’s party leader, Messias is trying to win the support of senators in search of votes to approve Luis Roberto Barroso’s seat in the STF. President Lula appointed the current AU Prime Minister in November, but the date for the Senate hearing was postponed and remains undetermined.
In his opinion, Messias defended the popular legitimacy to bring any citizen charges for crimes responsible for initiating impeachment proceedings against Supreme Court justices.

PL and PT criticize the STF decision
Messias spoke because, in the initial decision that changed the accountability law, Gilmar Méndez ordered the federal prosecutor’s office to take a position on the issue.
In the Federal Senate, Gilmard’s initiative was able to unify Parliament. The Minister received criticism from the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Davy Alcombre (Uniao Brasil), from opposition politicians such as Flavio Bolsonaro (PL), and from the leader of the government in the National Congress, Randolph Rodrigues (PT).
