The Palácio do Planalto considers that the withdrawal by the United States of sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), is the result of the dialogue established since September between Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump.
According to members of the government who followed the negotiations, from the start, the Brazilian insisted to his American colleague that Moraes and his wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, were no longer subject to the Magnitsky law.
The suspension of sanctions was considered fundamental by Lula. During the last telephone conversation between the two heads of state, on the 2nd, the Brazilian directly requested the suspension of Magnitsky sanctions against Moraes. According to his aides, Trump agreed and pledged to repeal them.
On social media, Institutional Relations Minister Gleisi Hoffmann celebrated the US President’s decision and said the suspension of sanctions is a defeat for the Bolsonaro family.
“The lifting of American sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes is a great victory for Brazil and President Lula. It was Lula who put this revocation on the table of Donald Trump, in a proud and sovereign dialogue. It is a great defeat for the family of Jair Bolsonaro, traitors who conspired against Brazil and against justice,” he posted.
