The Vehicle Accident Unit (UVAC) of the Palma local police continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal accident that occurred this Sunday in the Balearic capital, in which a three-year-old girl died. Initial investigations indicate that the driver of the car involved had suffered from an illness which caused him to lose control of the car. The incident caused the vehicle to invade the sidewalk, crushing the minor, her mother and her grandmother. The latter suffered varying degrees of injuries, but the little girl died instantly.
Officers are collecting testimonies and working on a detailed reconstruction of the moments preceding the accident. In addition, investigators are waiting to receive reports and assessments from health professionals who treated the man, who was traveling by car with his partner and two children. Although he was unhurt, the 51-year-old driver was taken to Son Llàtzer Hospital to assess his condition and determine whether he had passed out while driving.
At the same time, researchers are analyzing data recorded by the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR), a device similar to the black box of aircraft that allows key parameters such as speed, braking maneuvers and other relevant data to be known immediately before and after impact.
Concretely, the event took place after 12:00 p.m. in the Coll d’en Rabassa district, at the confluence of Bailén street and Can Caimari street, opposite a renowned butcher’s shop and next to the neighborhood football field.
At one point, the man who was driving the car accompanied by his partner and his two children left the road and ended up invading the sidewalk, crushing the minor, her mother – seriously injured – and her grandmother – in minor condition. The two women also received psychological care from the 112 emergency services deployed on site.
The girl’s mother was admitted to Son Espases University Hospital, where she could be released from the hospital this Monday, according to Europa Press.
On the other hand, the local police, who initially incorrectly indicated that the minor was seven years old, clarified that, once official documents were verified, the girl had turned three last November. The municipal body sent a statement regretting the error and apologizing to the family, the media and the public for any confusion caused.
