The Civil Police of Pernambuco is investigating the death of 55-year-old Ronald José Salvador Montenegro, which occurred after an accident during a bench press exercise at a gym in Olinda, in the Greater Recife (PE) region. The rod slipped from the man’s hands and hit him in the chest. The case was registered as accidental death by Rio Dos Police Station. However, investigations are still ongoing to determine the circumstances of what happened. The investigation must analyze whether there was error, recklessness or negligence.
Carnival character
- Ronald José Salvador Montenegro was a central figure in Olinda culture. He was president of the Palácio dos Bonecos Gigantes Cultural Center in Olinda. The carnival artist was also part of the “Midnight Man” group.
- The victim, known for his role in local culture, died on Tuesday (12/2), one day after the incident. He was treated, at first, in the gym itself, and then in the UPA, but he did not resist.
- He was buried on Wednesday in the Morada da Paz cemetery, in Paulista, inside Pernambuco.
“Suicide fingerprint”
According to experts, it can be inferred from the photos that the victim was not handling the equipment correctly when holding it with the “suicide grip” or “false grip.”
Ronald held the device without placing his thumb around the crossbar, a method considered inappropriate, as the crossbar is supported only in the palms of his hands. The report on the causes of death has not yet been completed.
According to the President of the Regional Council for Physical Education (Cref) of the XII Region / Pernambuco, Lucio Beltrao, the incident cannot be officially attributed to the “suicidal fingerprint”, but, according to him, the risks are much greater.
Beltrao explains that in addition to closing your hands, it is possible to use the equipment to reduce the risk of an accident, as well as the supervision of a professional, which is essential for him.
