A tournament for those who ate watermelons the fastest, held Thursday at the São Pedro Thermas Resort, a seaside resort in the interior of São Paulo, ended tragically with the death of a 37-year-old guest. The incident occurred during the recreational activity known as “Boca na Melancia”, the prize for the winner of which would be a portion of fries. According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat, the case was registered as a suspicious death at the São Pedro police station.
According to witnesses, the man appears to have choked on food during the competition and then suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Rescuers on site performed resuscitation massages until firefighters arrived, but he did not survive and died at hospital where he was taken alive.
In a memo sent to GLOBO, the station confirmed the incident involving the customer and noted that all emergency procedures were activated immediately after the team became aware of the situation. According to the establishment, the man was placed in cardiorespiratory arrest at the time of the collective dynamic, was rescued and transported to hospital, where he died.
