One of the best-kept secrets in recent Rio police history has finally been revealed. In an exclusive interview with Jorge Lordello for the Na Cena do Crime channel, Commissioner Daniel Gomes revealed that to elucidate the death of Tim Lopes, locate the journalist’s remains and identify Elias Maluco and his associates, he had to commit a crime.
Fábia Oliveira’s column had early access to excerpts from the interview, which will be broadcast this Wednesday (12/10), at 6 p.m., on YouTube. According to Lordello, the policeman kept the secret for 23 years due to the risk of sanction and even loss of public office.

Daniel Gomes, now 72 years old and still active, dedicated almost four decades to the Rio de Janeiro civil police and was 49 when he took over the investigation into the disappearance of Tim Lopes on June 2, 2002. At that time, the pressure to find the journalist dead or alive was enormous. Vila Cruzeiro was dominated by the Comando Vermelho and the law of silence made it impossible to obtain information on the journalist’s fate.

With the real likelihood that the case would end without a solution, Daniel said he made the decision to act outside of legal methods, betting everything on a strategy that he has only just decided to detail. This action was crucial in finding Tim Lopes’ remains, allowing the family to have a dignified burial.
This work also led to the arrest of Elias Maluco on September 19, 2002, as well as eight other people directly involved in the journalist’s execution.
In addition to his role in the case, Daniel Gomes is a writer, a teacher of new police officers and has even given lectures to security forces in the United States. Even with almost 40 years of career, he still has no plans to retire.
The interview promises to reveal everything behind the scenes of the investigation and the unconventional method that changed the course of the Tim Lopes case.
