Sheinbaum explained in his daily conference that his most recent conversation with Leo
The president described the dialogue as “very friendly,” “warm,” “cordial” and “sensitive,” and emphasized that the Pope sent greetings to the Mexican people.
“There is no date yet for his visit, but he is very interested in coming and strengthening the programs that we have with the Catholic Church, such as ‘Yes to disarmament, yes to peace,'” the president said, referring to the initiatives aimed at reducing violence through social and community participation.
Sheinbaum explained that during the conversation he explained to the Pope the importance of these programs for the country and the need for collaboration with various social and religious actors.
The President clarified that the Pope did not address any specific issues beyond the agreement on the need for “everyone” to participate “in pacification” and on the importance of strengthening cooperation between State and Church in initiatives of a social and humanitarian nature.
Likewise, Sheinbaum emphasized that the call came on a symbolic date for Mexicans, December 12, highlighting the role of the Virgin of Guadalupe as a central element of national identity.
“It is a very important symbol for Mexico and for millions of people,” he commented.
The President recalled that this invitation is part of a relationship of respect and cooperation between the Mexican State and the Holy See, affirming that her Government represents a position of openness to dialogue with all Churches as well as with non-believers.
The last visit by a pope to Mexico was that of Francis in 2016, when he traveled to several states in the country, including Chiapas, Chihuahua, Michoacán and Mexico City, where he visited the Basilica of Guadalupe. EFE
