
The Pope Leo XIV reiterated this Tuesday to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the need to continue the dialogue and renewed the “urgent desire that current diplomatic initiatives could lead to a a just and lasting peace“to end the war with Russia.
“During the cordial meeting, focused on the war in Ukraine, the Holy Father reiterated the need to continue the dialogue and renewed the urgent hope that ongoing diplomatic initiatives could lead to a just and lasting peace,” the Holy See press office reported.
The meeting was held at the papal residence of Castel Gandolfo, on the outskirts of Rome. Zelensky arrived around 9:40 a.m. local time (8:40 a.m. GMT) and left shortly after 10:20 a.m. (9:20 a.m. GMT). During the meeting, the Holy See explained, the pope spoke of “to the question of prisoners of war already the need for ensuring the return of Ukrainian children to their families“.

After his meeting with the pope, Zelensky to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloniat 3:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. GMT), as part of a series of contacts with key European leaders on the Ukraine peace process. The pope has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and, in his latest statements, celebrated progress in peace negotiations.
