The progressives of Paraná decided, this Monday (12/8), not to approve a possible candidacy of Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil) for the state government in 2026. The PP’s position creates a dilemma within the União Progressista federation (alliance between União Brasil and PP) for the former judge to present himself to the group.
The party’s national president, Ciro Nogueira, said that electoral decisions will be made jointly and reinforced that the party will respect the deliberations of the Paraná directorate. “I will never be against the decision of Paraná,” said the senator, adding that he hopes that the impasse does not generate attrition within the federation.
The meeting that consolidated the veto took place at the state headquarters of the PP and brought together leaders, parliamentarians and regional leaders. The president of the Directory of Paraná, Ricardo Barros, explained that the lack of understanding with União Brasil made support impossible. According to him, Moro had space for dialogue with local leaders for seven months, but did not get enough support. “This is the result of months of conversations that went nowhere,” he said.
Reason for the veto on the name of Sergio Moro
The veto on Moro’s name is also linked to the political scenario in the state. The PP constitutes the base of Governor Ratinho Junior (PSD), who intends to launch his own candidate for succession in 2026.
Among them are State Secretaries Guto Silva and Rafael Greca, Vice Governor Darci Piana and Legislative Assembly President Alexandre Curi. For the governor’s allies, Moro’s presence in the conflict is seen as the main obstacle to building a competitive list.
Ricardo Barros also stressed that the registration of a majority candidacy by the federation depends on the signature of Ciro Nogueira and the president of União Brasil, Antonio Rueda, but declared that “there is no consensus” to advance this process.

Elections in PR: of the 10 candidates supported by Sergio Moro, 8 lost
He added that Moro, if he maintains his intention to run at the Iguaçu Palace, should look for another party. “He will be a candidate anyway and will look for a party that guarantees him the party,” he assessed.
Despite the negative result of the state conflict, the PP intends to focus its efforts on renewing its seats: currently the party has five federal deputies and seven state deputies in Paraná. Ciro Nogueira acknowledged the senator’s electoral relevance, saying Moro was leading the internal polls, but reiterated that the local decision will be respected. The leader said he trusted dialogue to preserve the federation. “We will put national interests above all else,” he said.
