Demonstrators held demonstrations in several cities across the country this Sunday (7) against the increasing incidence of femicide and other forms of violence against women. The Levante Mulheres Vivas movement has called for protests in at least 20 Brazilian states and the Federal District.
Brazilian legislation defines femicide as the homicide of a woman committed because she is a woman. These reasons include domestic violence, family violence, belittling or discrimination based on gender. The punishment for this crime is imprisonment for a term of 20 to 40 years.
Brazil recorded more than 1,000 incidents of femicide in 2025. Specifically in the Federal District, 26 deaths were recorded this year. The most recent case in the federal capital occurred on Friday (5), when Army Corporal Maria de Lourdes Freire Matos was murdered by a soldier at a military installation.

In the capital São Paulo, the event brought together 9,200 people, according to a survey by Cebrap’s Political Debate Monitor in partnership with the USP.
In São Paulo, the capital, thousands of people gathered at midday in front of Masp on Avenida Paulista. The group displayed banners and posters with the message “Living Women” and wandered around the central region. The demonstration highlighted references to two recent cases: the murder of the pharmacist Daniele Guedes Antunesaged 38, in Santo André, and the death of Milena de Silva Lima27 years old, in Diadema. Both were attacked by former companions.
Military police and residents reported that Milena de Silva Lima was attacked by her ex-partner, João Victor de Lima Fernandes30 years old. The couple had been separated for two months and had a son.
In Rio de Janeiro, hundreds of people gathered at midday in front of Posto 5, on Avenida Atlântica, in Copacabana. Data from the Institute of Public Security (ISP) indicates that the state of Rio recorded 79 cases of femicide and 242 attempts in November 2025. Protesters displayed posters and banners against violence.
The protest also discussed a case that occurred on Wednesday (3), when a woman was admitted to hospital after being stabbed in Irajá. The victim, Aline Nascimentoreported to the police that she had been attacked by her ex-partner, Emerson William Marcolan Lima. The victim benefits from a measure of protection against Emerson, already responsible for an attempted femicide, after trying to throw her out of a window.
In Brasilia, the demonstration took place in the morning, around 10 a.m., in front of the Television Tower. The event brought together dozens of women who displayed posters and denounced the violence. Organizers have strengthened guidelines on protective measures and reporting channels.
In Florianópolis, the march started around 1 p.m. on the Hercílio Luz bridge. The event paid tribute to 31-year-old teacher Catarina Kasten, who was murdered on November 21. The perpetrator of the crime was arrested the same day and is charged with aggravated femicide, rape and concealment of a corpse.
In Belo Horizonte, demonstrators gathered around 11 a.m. on Praça Raul Soares. The group continued walking to Praça Sete and Praça da Estação. The act was part of the national mobilization “Living Women” and organized to demand justice, denounce impunity and demand public policies.
In João Pessoa, the act took place in Busto de Tamandaré. Paraíba recorded 26 cases of femicide between January and October 2025, exceeding the total of the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
