The leader of the PT in the Chamber of Deputies, MP Lindbergh Farias, celebrated the decision of the United States government which removed, this Friday (12/12), the sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and his wife under the Magnitsky Law. The magistrate’s family business was also released from any sanctions.
Lindbergh attributed this change to the actions of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with the Donald Trump government: “Victory of diplomacy. President Lula, you have succeeded in putting Brazil back on the path of dialogue after all the sabotage of the Bolsonaro family,” he declared on social networks. Check it out:

And he added: “It is a historic defeat for the traitors to the Homeland who tried to negotiate international sanctions, the revocation of visas, customs duties and the so-called “financial death penalty” against the STF rapporteur minister in the case of the coup, but above all a victory for President Lula, for Brazilian democracy and for the uncompromising defense of national sovereignty.
The suspension of sanctions comes after President Lula asked US President Donald Trump to lift sanctions against Brazilian officials. With the improvement in relations between the two leaders, the Brazilian government was betting on a positive response, as shown in Metropolises last week in Igor Gadelha’s column.
Sanctions
- The application of the Magnitsky Act against Moraes and his wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, follows threats made by the Trump administration due to the role of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court as rapporteur of the Golpita plot, which resulted in the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his allies.
- Moraes was sanctioned in July. Viviane, in September of this year, with the family business.
- With political justifications, the White House adopted measures in response to Bolsonaro’s arrest. Among them, the expansion of customs tariffs to Brazil, the withdrawal of visas from other members of the Supreme Court and auxiliary judges of the Court, federal police authorities and the Attorney General’s Office, as well as politicians working in the STF.
Magnitsky and its effects
The Magnitsky Act is applied by the United States against foreigners outside the country accused by the Americans of human rights violations. The law provides among the sanctions the freezing of assets and accounts in the United States as well as the ban on entry into North American territory and the ban on doing business with American companies, including financial companies.

In this way, the Moraes couple became, for a few months, the target of the North American legislation created in 2021. The law was born following the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who denounced a state corruption scheme and died in detention in Moscow in 2009. From now on, the minister, rapporteur of important actions of the STF, which affect the Bolsonaro family, escapes sanctions.
