The board of directors of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority approved the proposal to sign an inter-administrative agreement aimed at financing, processing and carrying out the renovation of the Link Dock of the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The agreement involves several key institutions and establishes the necessary framework to activate an action considered strategic for the future of the city’s coastal front.
The initiative has the participation of Tenerife Island Councilhe Santa Cruz de Tenerife Town Hall and the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of Government of the Canary Islands. All administrations will assume economic and management commitments based on the percentages established in the agreement.
A million-dollar investment to transform the waterfront
The renovation of the Link Dock envisages a total investment estimated at 80 million euros. This is one of the largest actions planned in the port and urban area of the capital of Tenerife in recent years, both in terms of economic volume and territorial impact.
The central objective of the project is to redefine this port space to make it compatible with new uses, retaining its logistical functionality and at the same time strengthening its integration with the city. The current approach is committed to coordinated, viable development adapted to the real needs of the environment.
What does the Link Dock remodel include?
The approved project provides for an overall transformation of the quay, with actions targeting port, tourist and citizen uses. Among the planned elements are:
- Construction of a specific station for cruise ships and ferries.
- Development of commercial areas and catering areas.
- Creation of covered pedestrian crossings open to the public.
- Direct connection with the urban fabric as a natural extension of the city.
These infrastructures will strengthen the role of the port as a maritime mobility hub, while becoming a space for citizen meetings and economic activity.
A historic trial dating back to the 1990s
The integration of the Link Dock in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is not a new idea. The first proposals were born at the beginning of the 90s, when we began to consider the recovery of this port area as an area of direct relationship between the port and the city.
For years, various projects have been suspended due to their technical, economic and administrative complexity. However, the need to rethink the coastal façade is gaining weight in the capital’s urban and port strategies.
The final effort began in 2022
In 2022, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has resumed the technical studies necessary to reactivate this unique action. The objective was to adapt the initial project to current conditions, to rationalize the planned investment and to ensure compatibility between the different planned uses.
The new approach prioritizes the criteria of efficiency, sustainability and economic viability, without renouncing the essence of the initial approach. In addition, it strengthens the visual and functional relationship between the Plaza de España, the port and the sea, one of the most representative urban axes of the city.
Urban, economic and social impact
The approval of the agreement represents a decisive step in making the Link Pier a key part of urban regeneration. The action will redevelop the waterfront, improve accessibility and generate new activity spaces.
From an economic point of view, the project is expected to boost sectors such as cruise tourism, commerce and catering, in addition to generating jobs during the execution and operation phases. On a social level, the opening of new pedestrian spaces will help to strengthen the historical link between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and its port.
With this institutional agreement, the administrations concerned consolidate a common roadmap for one of the most relevant actions on the coast of the capital, an intervention that will mark the future of the Link to the dock and will redefine the relationship between the city and the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
