Spanish specialist Rafa Nadal underwent surgery at the Teknon Medical Center in Barcelona, where he operated alone due to severe osteoarthritis. As reported by those close to next year’s 22-time Grand Slam champion, the intervention was due to “severe osteoarthritis of the trapecio-metacarpal joint”, which unites the base of the thumb to the muñeca, between the trapecio and the first metacarpal bone.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Ángel Ruiz-Cotorro, Rafa Nadal’s doctor, in collaboration with doctor Vilaró, and carried out by doctor Álex Lluch. The procedure consisted of an “arthroplasty” with the aim of eliminating pain and recovering joint movement.
“It seems to me that I cannot play the Australian Open in a big way,” the tennis player joked on his social networks. “I had to undergo manual intervention due to a long-standing problem, but I hope to be ready!” he added.
The major player, who accumulated 92 titles, including 22 Grand Slams, left tennis in November 2024. His last tournament was the Davis Cup, which took place this year in Malaga. November 19 was Nadal’s last holiday. The Spaniards lost to the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, to a huge ovation from pabellón Martín Carpena to thank him for his career and his way of competing.
