Professionals such as Sergio Mauricio (narrator), Reginaldo Lemi (commentator), Max Wilson (commentator), Felipe Giavonni (commentator), and Mary Baker (reporter), who followed the category in loco, are some of the names that have become references in the broadcasts.
Historic season
It was the first season of F1 on Band in 2021. In the first year, the broadcaster was lucky to broadcast one of the most exciting seasons in history, won by Max Verstappen (Red Bull) on the last lap of the final Grand Prix.
Over the five years, races averaged between 2 and 3 points, with the peak near 5 points. An example of this is the Austrian Grand Prix, in June, which reached 4.6 points, one of the broadcasters’ best ratings.
Marianna Becker is loved by the audience at Interlagos
In addition to the historic season and good audience, during these five years, Marianna Becker has undoubtedly been one of the main faces of the band in racing broadcasts. The journalist was honored at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in Interlagos last year. The fans wear the face of the band’s motorsport segment.
Marianna Becker was well received by the sport’s regular audience, who approved of her relaxed style when commentating on the sport and her approachability when interacting with the riders. Mariana always acts as a live correspondent at the Grand Prix, responsible for making predictions about the races, commenting on the results and interviewing the race winners.
Mariana Becker was hired by Globo in 1994, and covered Formula 1 events on the channel between 2008 and 2020. As of 2021, when Band bought the broadcast rights to the tournament, the 53-year-old journalist has signed with the São Paulo broadcaster.
Sergio Mauricio controversy
The lead announcer’s voice for the race broadcast, Sergio Mauricio, was involved in some controversy. At the beginning of the year, Al-Rawi was removed after a controversy involving an offensive post against Congresswoman Erica Hilton (PSOL-SP), which was attributed to a profile on X (formerly Twitter) which, until then, had been identified as belonging to Sergio Mauricio.
In the post, the narrator referred to the MP as “human fake news,” and concluded by calling her a “thing.” Sergio’s response was directed at another biased post in which X user Oliver Noronha said Hilton dealt with “acceptance issues” for ignoring her identity.
It didn’t take long for the comment to spread on social media and Sergio became the target of criticism from netizens. The negative repercussions were so great that the narrator chose to deactivate his profile on “X” and also sparked a reaction from the broadcaster, who had to temporarily remove the narrator, naming Napolio de Almeida and Ivan Bruno as temporary replacements.
Initially, the narrator denied authoring the posts and referred to the profile as fake. After a period of absence and the start of the motorsport season approaching, Band chose to keep him in his position.
Debts
Liberty Media, the company responsible for commercial rights to Formula 1, and the Band faced serious impasses in their partnership last year. Financial problems almost threatened the continuity of Formula 1 broadcasting as early as 2024. According to information at the time, Band had accumulated debts exceeding R$1.2 billion, making it difficult to fulfill its contractual obligations with Liberty Media.
The situation has raised speculation that the American company is considering terminating the contract before its scheduled end at the end of this year. It was this tension between Band and Liberty Media that opened the way for Globo to resume negotiations with the American company.
Boner joke
Bonner was responsible for announcing the return of Formula 1 to Globo after five years of broadcasting on Band. During the advertisement, the journalist mocked the competitor. “Next year it will be Formula 1 on Globo. And you still know what Formula 1 is, right? Because it left Globo… Formula 1 is an interesting sport,” Bonner said.
This statement quickly had repercussions on social media, and Tio Jose, the band’s narrator, decided to speak out about the episode. On his official account on
