The high temperatures hitting the city and expected to continue over the coming days, with thermometers exceeding 30 degrees at least until Friday, have increased demand for health facilities. The municipal network alone recorded 3,384 consultations, between last Tuesday and the day before yesterday, for people presenting symptoms linked to heat, such as dizziness, weakness, tachycardia and fainting. The volume is 30% higher than last year, during the same period, when 2,611 cases were recorded.

The state network search was also great. During the weekend alone there were 300 cases, out of the more than 2,000 registered in the last 15 days, which led the government to create a hydration operation, with the distribution of drinking water in high traffic points, such as beaches and train stations, in addition to the 27 UPAs in the state, which have internal and external fountains, to also serve the homeless population.
The big movement in the municipality’s units did not surprise the Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz. He explains that this is already expected when the city reaches heat level 3 (on a scale that goes up to 5), which happened from 3:50 p.m. on Christmas Eve. According to Soranz, with thermometers close to 40°C, it is normal that there are around 430 daily cases of heat-related assistance.
— We have worked for 12 years analyzing cases of hospitalization and care, correlating the data with temperature and climate data and we managed to realize that when there is a high and sustained temperature, there is an increase in the number of people who seek care and are hospitalized — said the secretary, warning that the risk of death also increases in this scenario, although there is no confirmed occurrence of this type.

Hospitalizations, in the municipal network alone, already total 143. Two of them, according to the secretary, were caused by skin burns caused by the use of uncertified tanning products. It warns of the risk associated with the use of certain hair waxes, which can melt under intense heat and leak, causing corneal burns which can lead to momentary or even permanent blindness. The elderly and children are most concerned.
— These are the two most critical situations, because older people have more difficulty being thirsty. In the case of children, they are often not the ones who regulate the clothes they wear. They also have a smaller volume of fluid in the body and become dehydrated more easily — says Soranz, who also highlights patients with chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and kidney disease as those who are also at greater risk of hospitalization and death on hotter days.

The Secretary of State for Health, Cláudia Mello, adds that two symptoms that should be concerning are dry mouth and dark urine:
— In these cases, it is necessary to take him to the health unit and hydrate him sufficiently to react quickly and save his life.
For the general population, it recommends avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and recommends the use of light clothing and sunscreen (certified by Inmetro), in addition to hydration.

Yesterday, water distribution points were installed at the Central do Brasil stations, in the Center, in Madureira, in the North zone, and in Bangu and Campo Grande, in the West zone. In the Center, teams equipped with bicycles and carts concentrated near the entrance to the Central metro station, with the aim of distributing around 5 thousand liters of water throughout the day.
The anti-heat operation began this Sunday with the free distribution of 15,000 liters of drinking water on the beaches of Copacabana, Leme and Ipanema, as well as at the Arena da Baixada, in Duque de Caxias. 3.4 tonnes of ice were also distributed to the same locations. The integrated mobilization includes the participation of the Civil Defense, Health and Environment secretariats, in addition to Cedae.
