A major power outage occurred in the city of San Francisco on Saturday evening (December 20, 2025), leaving 130,000 residents without power, the largest local electric company reported. Much of this city, a tech hub on the West Coast of the United States, was in the dark in the middle of the holiday shopping weekend due to public transit disruptions and many traffic lights being turned off.
The power outage left much of the city’s north in darkness, first in the Richmond and Presidio neighborhoods and by early afternoon in the areas around Golden Gate Park, then across a larger area.
Recommendation not to go outside
“We are working with emergency services and city officials on a power outage in San Francisco affecting approximately 130,000 customers,” Pacific Gas & Electric Company said in a statement on X. A company spokeswoman later said in a video on social media that teams were working to resolve the issue. “We hope to be able to do restoration work later this evening,” he said.
The city’s mayor urged residents to stay at home and, if possible, not to go out on the streets. He added that some traffic lights were not working, so authorities sent police and traffic inspectors to help control the intersections. “The rain is coming and it’s nighttime. If you don’t need to go out, stay home and I’ll keep you updated,” Mayor Daniel Lurie posted on X from the local emergency center. A fire at a substation caused the power outage, Lurie added. In a later video message He said service had already been restored for 90,000 users.
