Sánchez assures that did not follow Cerdán’s appearance in detail because he was going to the Belgian capital to participate in the European Council this Thursday and he limited himself to emphasizing that the PSOE acted “with full force in this matter.”
The President of the Government also took advantage of his institutional presence in Brussels to attack the “political and media right”whom he accuses of “whitewashing Vox”. And he defended continuity within the Sumar government, despite the latest criticisms from Yolanda Díaz, to continue applying his “road map of progress” in social matters.

After Cerdán’s criticism of socialist senator Alfonso Gil and his regret at having been abandoned by his party (“better alone than in bad company“, he said in the Senate), are you afraid of what the former secretary general has to say about his time in the PSOE? they asked the president of the government.
“For obvious reasons, because I was traveling to Brussels, I did not have the opportunity to follow this appearance, so I do not know in what context and in what situation Santos Cerdán actually said these words,” Sánchez responded.
“What I can guarantee you is that the Socialist Party acted with all force in this case, as in others that have unfortunately affected us. And I would like other political parties to do the same,” he concluded before rushing to the meeting.
He had already been questioned about criticism from Sumar, who accuses him of encouraging Vox not to react forcefully to the latest cases of corruption and sexual harassment within the PSOE.
“Despite the differences, because we are political organizations with a different culture, I believe that There are many things that unite us, the Socialist Party and Sumar. The main thing is the roadmap of progress that we are implementing during these seven years of government and what remains to be done until 2027,” Sánchez said.
From there, the President of the Government denied any responsibility for the growth of Vox and blamed the “whitewashing that the right has been doing to the far right for 7 years”.
“And I’m not just referring to the political right, I am also referring to the media right, to opinion makers“, he stressed.
“Because I remember hearing this guy say: man, if you agree with Unidas Podemos, which has the Communist Party, we can agree with the far right,” Sánchez says.
But according to him, this parallelism is not tenable because, from a historical point of view, the Communist Party contributed to the “democratization process” after the death of Franco. “And this has nothing to do with the historical roots of the extreme right in our country, which is clearly nostalgic for this Franco regime, this dictatorship,” he said.
The president of the government also assures that the PP has assumed not only the content of Vox’s policy but also “the way of doing politics”.
“Today we have no political opposition. We have an absolutely destructive opposition that votes against policies that are beneficial not only for its citizens, but also for its own administrations,” he stressed.
For all these reasons, Sánchez considers that the growth of Vox “has nothing to do with the actions of the Spanish government, it has everything to do with the whitewashing that the political and media right makes of Vox“.
Ukraine and Mercosur
Beyond questions of national policy, the president of the government called on European leaders to “make decisions” on the most urgent issues on the European agenda, financial aid to Ukraine and the signing of the trade agreement with Mercosur.
Sánchez revealed that he had not spoken with the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni (which has in its hands the decisive vote which will decide whether the agreement with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will be ratified or not), but nevertheless affirms that it is making “every effort” to bring it to fruition.
“It would be very frustrating if Europe does not reach an agreement with Mercosur once we have already managed to approve in the European Parliament these safeguard clauses for the European primary sector and everything is ready. Likewise, the presidency of Mercosur and the government of Brazil have prepared everything so that this can be ratified”, indicated Sánchez.
