Finally, the proposed State Pact against the climate emergency announced in August by the Government It will consist of 80 measures. These include the creation of a “national network of climate shelters” which mainly uses buildings from the … General State Administration; the birth of a support network for scientists against harassment campaigns or even the “facilitation of verification processes” against climate hoaxes.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced the idea of a state pact against the climate emergency last summer, as criticism intensified for his absence during the wave of fires and lack of resources. Already at the time, the PP criticized this announcement as being a “smokescreen”. However, the realization of content is accompanied by another wave, that of sexual harassment complaints within the PSOE and the corruption cases who are besieging the government.
The text made public this Wednesday includes measures already announced months ago, such as the creation of a National Civil Protection and Emergency Agency to improve coordination in risky situations or the creation of a permanent funds “with national and regional means” against disaster damage and for risk prevention.
During the presentation, without questions, Sánchez also announced that the Ministry of Ecological Transition will finance flood plans in municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants and will devote 20 million euros to fighting forest fires in these municipalities.
Support for scientists
Among the new measures, however, are the creation of “a public support network aimed at strengthen protection, support and response capacity technicians, scientists, researchers, meteorologists and professionals against harassment campaigns.” It will also create a expert group in national climate change which helps ensure that decision-making is not based solely on “intuitions”, defended the President of the Government.
If the text were to move forward as announced today, the “facilitation of verification process provide a rapid response to viral cases of scientific and climate disinformation. ” Because, as Sánchez pointed out in his speech, there is a “noisy minority” that fights scientific discourse with “memes”, with great ability to “go viral”.
Furthermore, and “before next summer”, the Government will launch a “national network of climate refuges”, through administrative buildings which will be made available to citizens and will be coordinated with local and regional entities.
