Pedro Sánchez and Oriol Junqueras spoke by telephone this weekend and agreed to meet as soon as possible, which will not happen until the rest of the year due to the international commitments of the President of the Government and the Christmas holidays. The goal … of the meeting will be that the president of ERC know first hand “How (Sánchez) plans to act from now on on two lines: respecting the commitments with Catalonia and, also, the democratization measures of all institutional areas, including the PSOE.”
The meeting, advanced by the ERC spokesperson, Isaac Albert, at a press conference this Monday, from Barcelona, and confirmed by Sánchez himself, during the appearance to take stock of the year that is about to end, from the Moncloa, this could be the aperitif of others that the President of the Government has carried out with his legislative partners, although Sánchez has limited this initiative only to Junqueras, those of ERC have defined it as “contact series” with other political groups. The idea would be to save Parliament by convincing the executive partners.
Rufián: “We are faced with a dilemma: we do not want Abascal to be vice president but we do not want to continue to be embarrassed”
Albert, who wondered if there could be general elections in 2026, pointed out that in the conversation between Junqueras and Sánchez “a timetable” was not specified but “this week the president (Sánchez) is in Europe, next week is Christmas, (so) we should start the year with this series of contacts.” For his part, the President of the Government confirmed having spoken with Junqueras, whom he will meet, but he downplayed the importance of the meeting, recalling that he is also doing it with “other parliamentary groups”.
Along the same lines, Gabriel Rufián, leader of the ERC in the Lower House, requested that the President of the Executive act this Monday to put an end to the alleged cases of corruption and sexual harassment that are becoming known linked to the PSOE. Rufián highlighted that in ERC, “we are faced with a dilemma that has a bad solution: many of us do not want Abascal to be vice president but we do not want to continue being embarrassed”; and asked the government to “stop believing that this is a conspiracy, to stop shaming and to stop saying ‘what about you'”, reports Juan Casillas.
For his part, Josep Rius, Junts spokesperson, insisted on the formation of a common pro-independence front in Congress to “take advantage” of the “the degradation of the Spanish political system” linked to cases of alleged PSOE corruption and accusations of sexual harassment. Rius, during a press conference after the meeting of the leadership of the party led by Carles Puigdemont, urged the ERC on the need to join forces with Congress and take advantage of “the weakness of Pedro Sánchez following his non-compliance.”
From Junts they recall that Sánchez is “cornered, he does not have a majority to be able to govern, there is no budget and the PSOE is tainted by cases of corruption and sexual harassment.”
“This common strategy (mentioned last week by Míriam Nogueras) is more necessary than ever at a time when the president (of the Generalitat of Catalonia), Salvador Illa, has given up defending the interests of Catalonia in Madrid, because he presides over a government subordinate totally to the PSOE”, said Rius’ spokesperson. From Junts they are ending the legislature because they consider that Sánchez is “cornered, he does not have a majority to be able to govern, there is no budget and the PSOE is tainted by cases of corruption and sexual harassment”.
