Two days after the start of the power outage caused by the passage of an extratropical cyclone, more than a million properties are still facing lack of electricity in the state of São Paulo in the early hours of this Friday (12).
In the fifth power outage to hit the capital São Paulo and the metropolitan region in just over two years, since November 2023, the total number of people affected is 1,061,592 in the early hours of this Friday.
In the capital, the outage affects 735,114 customers, who complain about Enel’s delay in resuming supply. When asked, the dealership did not give an estimate on when service will be fully restored.
“To deal with priority situations, the company has 700 generators. We emphasize that we will continue working until we restore electricity to all customers affected by the effects of the cyclone,” said a company press release.
Enel says entire sections of the network have been damaged, impacting energy supplies. The company claims to have mobilized teams since the power outages began.
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) declared this Thursday (11) that the state is hostage to Enel and once again requested the intervention and expiration of the concession contract for the supply of electricity in the metropolitan region. The company is already working to extend the contract by 30 years, which expires in 2028.
Besides the lack of electricity, the city is also facing other problems caused by the storm, such as lack of water, chaos at airports and more than a thousand fallen trees.
Two people died in the state due to the aftermath of the cyclone. The first case occurred on Tuesday (10), in Campos do Jordão. A man has died after a landslide hit his home during the storm.
The second case, confirmed this Thursday, occurred in the capital. A woman was hit by the collapse of a wall in Jardim Sapopemba, Eastern Zone, on Wednesday (10). She was taken to the local general hospital, but did not survive.
According to the CGE (Climate Emergency Management Center) of the city of São Paulo, the cyclone is moving away towards the open sea and the winds are decreasing in Greater São Paulo. However, a new low pressure system brings rain this weekend.
