US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent has suspended his scheduled visit to Argentina, which was scheduled to take place next week.
The decision of the strong North American official became known after President Javier Miley canceled his participation in the 2026 World Cup draw in the United States.
In the heart of President Donald Trump’s administration, Miley’s withdrawal from the lottery, which will take place on Friday the fifth of this month at the Kennedy Center in Washington, was not satisfactory.
In principle, the head of state had announced that he would travel to participate in the event and it was expected that he would occupy an important place alongside the Republican president, considering Argentina is the current world champion.
However, it was confirmed last week that the visit had been cancelled, amid the government’s dispute with the president of the Argentine Football Association, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, who will be present at the draw.
At the end of last October, after the electoral victory of the La Libertad Avanza party, Picent announced that he would travel to Argentina again before the end of the year, and that this visit would take place next week, which has now been cancelled.
Picente was responsible for executing the swap with the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic, and even intervened in the local market by purchasing pesos, before and after the legislative elections.
