Claudia Leitte is accused of religious discrimination after changing the lyrics of the song Caranguejo. The singer replaced the line “Hailing Queen Iemanjá” with “I sing to my King Yeshua”.
Due to this attitude, the Bahia Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a civil action against the artist, requesting that she be ordered to pay 2 million reais for collective moral damage.
The case had repercussions last year, during Carnival, when Internet users retrieved a video of a performance in which Claudia Leitte modified the lyrics of the song to avoid mentioning a religious entity of African origin.

In the original excerpt, the song says: “The tide is full / Waiting for it to empty / Throwing flowers into the sea / Greeting Queen Iemanjá”. In the version sung by the artist, the last phrase was modified to “I only praise my king Yeshua”, the name of Jesus in Hebrew.
Caranguejo was released by Claudia Leitte in 2004, at a time when she was still part of the band Babado Novo.
About the action
In addition to compensation, the public prosecutor asks Claudia Leitte to pay the amount to the National Fund for the Defense of Diffuse Rights or to entities representing religions of African origin.
