This Wednesday, the Senate approved the bill that reduces the sentences of those convicted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for acts related to the coup attempt that culminated on January 8, 2023, among them former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), whose period in a closed regime could be reduced from almost 7 years to 2 years and 4 months.
Approved by 48 votes to 25, the project was amended in a previous vote in the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) to clarify that sentence reductions will only be applied to people involved in acts linked to the attempted coup, and not to other crimes.
The rapporteur of the proposal in the Senate, Esperidião Amin (PP-SC), devoted a good part of his report to defending the fact that the modification of the text does not constitute a change of merit – which would force the proposal to return to the Chamber -, but rather a simple editorial modification.
