MDB senators warned President Lula (PT) that the Senate should approve on Wednesday (17) a project that reduces the sentences of those convicted of participating in coups, among them former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The Chamber of Deputies approved, in the early hours of last Wednesday (10), the project which replaces the broad amnesty and provides for the reduction of the sentences of the former president and other people arrested for participation in the attacks against the seat of Power on January 8, 2023.
On Wednesday evening, during a meeting with the president in Granja do Torto, the leader of the MDB in the Senate, Eduardo Braga (AM), the president of the CAE (Commission of Economic Affairs), Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), and the leader of the government in the House, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), took for granted the approval of the bill.
The conclusion is the result of a probable agreement between the presidents of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), with the approval of the ministers of the STF (Federal Supreme Court).
The assessment was that a request for revision (more time to study the material) would be ineffective as only one hour could be given to evaluate the text. According to reports, Lula reiterated that he was against the reduction of sentences, but did not specify whether he would veto the project. The President was also informed that the Presidential act must be annulled by the House.
The president’s aides say the tendency is for the project to be vetoed. These allies recall that Lula had already expressed his opposition to the proposal in September, under pressure led by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP) to obtain an amnesty.
This Thursday (11), during an event in Minas Gerais, Lula said that he will make a decision on the proposed reduction of sentences for those accused of coup attempts when the text arrives for his sanction, but that Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will have to pay for the crime.
“The discussion now goes to the Senate, let’s see what happens. When it gets to my desk, I will make the decision. God and I, sitting at my desk, will make the decision. I will do what I understand needs to be done, because he has to pay for the attempted coup, for the attempted destruction of democracy.”
The senators also informed Lula of the procedure designed for the debate on the impeachment process of STF ministers. It was noted that tempers calmed down after the withdrawal of Minister Gilmar Mendes who, following the request of the AGU, revised the decision which would restrict the right of the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) to request the dismissal of members of the tribunal.
During the conversation, which lasted about three hours, Lula informed that he would call Alcolumbre probably this week. The president reiterated what he said about the Senate President and his predecessor, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
Lula said he appreciated them both, but did not give up the prerogative of appointing the STF minister. The president recalled contacting Alcolumbre and Pacheco to inform them of his choice for AGU Chief Minister Jorge Messias. He said he understood that this was the gesture required by Alcolumbre to prepare for the approval of the name of his candidate.
The intention is that Messiah will be questioned in February next year.
