Sergio Ramos managed to resonate in Monterrey in just over 10 months. The Spanish central team said goodbye to the Rayados after a brief stint in Mexican football where they were able to regain their fitness, take a few penalties, become captain and achieve glory. Ramos decided not to renew his contract, which ends next December, after his club was eliminated in the semi-finals. Last summer, a Club World Cup also took place. The city gave itself to the player and the player responded with determination.
“The end of a stage that created lots of illusions in February and which allowed me to discover a country, a city, a football… and which gave me a lot of new experiences and, above all, a lot of friends. Forever, I will feel proud to have worn the brasalete of the captain of the Rayados”, wrote the 39-year-old footballer in a message on social networks. Since last Saturday, Monterrey officials knew that Ramos’ contract was coming to an end. The only possibility of keeping him a few more days in the team was for the club to be champion of the Mexican League, but it was Toluca, the current champion, who crushed that idea.
Ramos played 34 games with the Monterrey uniform, number 93 on his back, and a party of Mexican soccer stars against the United States MLS. The Real Madrid team has scored six goals in the Mexican championship in the 27 matches played. During the Club World Cup, he played four matches and scored against Inter with a goal in his specialty: a header from a corner. The central defense coincided in the northern city with Óliver Torres, exjugador of Atlético; Sergio Canales, manager of Racing de Santander and strategist Domènec Torrent. He also faced rival James Rodríguez, who played in León with Keylor Navas, his companion in Madrid. In Mexico, he discovers his face as a singer and publishes his song Cibèle.
“To the club, to my dear comrades, to the technical bodies, to the employees, to everyone, thank you. And above all thank you to your friends, aficionados, who allowed me to achieve such warmth and great affection from the first moment I set foot in the city. I will always remember with nostalgia this stage of my career and I will always say with pride “Come to Monterrey!”, he added in his farewell letter. During Sergio Ramos’ last match, the defender scored a penalty goal, even though his club was on the last frontier to play a final.
