President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for a huge event in the Zocalo in Mexico City to commemorate the seven years of the so-called Fourth Transformation (T4). This date reminds us of December 1, 2018, when Andrés Manuel López Obrador assumed the presidency and announced the official start of the political project that has characterized the national agenda in recent years. Since then, Morena has maintained control of the federal government and promoted a series of policies that, according to the movement, seek to strengthen the fight against corruption, inequality and privilege.
“We conclude the year 2025 with seven years of transformation. A historic celebration. The people of Mexico are more aware than ever, and that is why I want to call on them to defend what has been achieved, the gains of the people. Let us defend democracy and freedoms,” the president said in a promotional video calling for the celebration. Sheinbaum arrives at this celebration having completed his first year in office, last October 1, with an approval level of 78%, higher than the 72% recorded by López Obrador in the same term of office, but also two weeks after a large anti-government march called by Generation Z with a high participation of opponents.
Where will the 7th anniversary of 4T be celebrated?
The meeting will be held in the capital’s Zocalo, which will once again serve as a meeting point. Both López Obrador and Sheinbaum used this public square for government reports, mobilizations, and celebrations of the movement.
As has happened on previous occasions, traffic in the surrounding area is scheduled to be cut off. Among the roads affected are the Pino Suarez, 20 de November and 5 de Mayo, in addition to the Plaza de la Constitución circuit.
When is the celebration and when does it start?
The event called by the President and her party, Morena, will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 11:00 am. The presidency stated that the gathering will be open to the public and that activities will begin at the scheduled time in the morning. The capital’s authorities recommended considering additional travel times in case of possible road closures in the historic centre.
Although the full program has not yet been announced, members of the federal government, state leaders and Morena leaders are expected to participate. Political messaging is also expected to shape the project’s priorities for the coming years.
Masha the tiger
Before the event in the Zocalo, young people supporting the ruling party called for a so-called Tiger March. The name refers to an expression used by López Obrador in the past, where he warned that “they will wake the tiger” in reference to the massive social backlash.
According to its promoters, the demonstration seeks to support Claudia Sheinbaum and the government, as well as to defend what they consider to be the achievements of the Fourth Transformation, especially in social and political matters. It also aims to show support for national sovereignty and express rejection of what organizers interpret as external influences on Mexico. At the same time, the mobilization is trying to highlight that there is a sector of youth that supports the movement and does not feel represented by other public expressions, such as the march of the so-called Generation Z, chosen by the opposition.
The demonstration is not part of Morena’s official activities, but some party lawmakers supported the mobilization.
