MADRID, December 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, proposed that the UN intervene as a mediator in the crisis in Venezuela and warned of the danger of foreign military intervention, after the United States declared the government of Nicolas Maduro a “terrorist organization” and blockaded its entire oil fleet.
Sheinbaum dishonored the United Nations for its lack of initiative in this matter. “It has not been seen,” he said Wednesday during his usual morning press conference, during which he explained that beyond the considerations that the Maduro government might raise, it is essential to call for dialogue and a peaceful resolution.
“Due to President Trump’s statement and the situation in Venezuela, we reiterate Mexico’s position, in accordance with the Constitution, of non-intervention, foreign non-interference, self-determination of the people and peaceful resolution of controversies,” the Mexican president stressed.
“Beyond opinions on the Venezuelan regime, on the Maduro presidency, beyond that, Mexico’s position must always be no to intervention, no to foreign interference, peaceful resolution of conflicts and dialogue for peace,” he reiterated.
Sheinbaum urged the United Nations to assume its role in this crisis “to avoid any bloodshed”, while leaving the door open for possible joint mediation by the region’s presidents.
“We can be a point of negotiation, of meeting if the parties wish,” said the president. “Let us hope that there will be no intervention, the whole world must guarantee a peaceful solution,” he said.
