Tenerife returned to victory this Saturday after beating Río Breogán at home (96-108), thanks to a brilliant performance from Georgian Giorgi Shermadini (18 points, 10 rebounds and 34 PIR credits) and Canadian international Aaron Doornekamp (20 points and 6 triples).
The remarkable success of the Canarian team marked the match. Txus Vidorreta’s team punished the Galician defense with an offensive performance. Breogán, accustomed to living off his success on the three-point line, closed the first quarter without scoring a triple.
This unusual percentage contrasted with Tenerife, who were close to 90 percent with six trebles. Luis Casimiro tried to stop the aurinegro wind with a timeout (7-20, min.5) which practically had no effect because his rival did not slow down his scoring rate.
The entry of Croatian Dominik Mavra breathed new life into the Breoganista attack. His team launched into the attack, but between Bruno Fitipaldo and Giorgi Shermadini they held Tenerife, who reached the halfway point of the match with an advantage of eight points (51-59).
The start of the third quarter seemed final. With a harmonious game in attack, Tenerife hit their rival. Two triples from Doornekamp and another from Marcelinho Huertas, from a corner after a good circulation, put the island team on the scoreboard (55-72, min.24). Casimiro stopped the match. And on the defensive side, his team began to believe in the comeback, despite the fact that Marcelinho Huertas gave oxygen to his team in attack.
Breogán took advantage of two attacks – a three-pointer from Cook and a counterattack that ended in a defeat from Francis Alonso – to go below the ten-point disadvantage. Mavra achieved it shortly after (71-79), but a technical foul on Francis Alonso – for protest while time was running out in the third quarter – and two triples – one from Fitipaldo and the other from Doornekamp – extinguished the Galician reaction and condemned the duel in favor of the visitors (73-88, min.32).
