At least 10 people died in a shooting this Sunday (14/12) on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. A dozen people were injured and taken to hospital. Australian police said two suspects had been arrested and at least one of the two suspected shooters was among the dead.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, several shots were fired at the famous beach, where a Jewish festival was taking place.
“There are two people in custody on Bondi Beach,” New South Wales Police posted on their X account.
“The police operation continues and we ask the public to avoid the area,” authorities said.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been briefed in detail on developments in the incident, a government spokesperson confirmed to Australian channel ABC.
Several witnesses confirmed to the country’s media that it was a shooting carried out by a still undetermined number of armed people.
Part of the beach was the scene of a celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which begins this Sunday.
Located east of Sydney, Bondi is Australia’s most famous beach and attracts large numbers of tourists, surfers and swimmers, especially on weekends.
