Six days after the wind caused by the extratropical cyclone formed in the south of the country, more than 26 thousand properties remain without electricity in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, according to the monitoring panel of Enel, the concessionaire that serves the region.
In the capital São Paulo alone, 17,271 addresses are affected. The second most affected city is Cotia, with 2,315 customers still in the dark. Next comes Itapecerica da Serra, with 838 properties.
In a statement released on Sunday evening (12/14), Enel indicated that energy supply in São Paulo and the metropolitan area “returns to normal standards in the concession area, with the restoration of service to customers.”
The passage of an extratropical cyclone last Wednesday (10), with winds of almost 100 km/h, left more than 2 million properties without electricity.
In addition to damage to homes and businesses, the problem eventually caused water shortages and traffic chaos due to faulty traffic signals. The wind also downed dozens of trees and led to the cancellation of more than 300 flights at São Paulo airports.
What does Enel say?
In the note, Enel indicates that “the distributor’s technicians continue to work on some more complex cases of network reconstruction, which involve the change of cables, poles and other equipment”. Furthermore, specifies the concessionaire, “the teams are also working to respond to requests for power cuts recorded after the weather event”.
According to Enel, the storm was the longest ever recorded in the region. “The gusts reached a peak of 82.8 km/h in Mirante de Santana. The radars of the Emergency Management Center (CGE) of the city of São Paulo recorded a local peak of 98.1 km/h in the Lapa region,” according to the press release.
Power outage in São Paulo
- Residents of the capital São Paulo and the metropolitan region have been affected by a power outage for six days, after a wind with gusts of almost 100 kilometers per hour hit the region due to an extratropical cyclone formed in the south of the country.
- As of Sunday morning (14), around 160,000 properties were still without power. On Sunday evening, Enel announced that the situation had returned to normal.
- On Wednesday (10), the power outage affected more than 2 million properties in Greater São Paulo.
- Other impacts of winds include lack of water, falling trees and flight cancellations.
- Some neighborhoods were also left without water. According to Sabesp, the lack of electricity is preventing homes from being supplied.
On Friday (12), the Prosecutor’s Office at the Federal Court of Auditors (MPTCU) recommended the suspension of any administrative act of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) related to the renewal of the Enel concession contract.
For the organization, the “serious failures” in the provision of energy distribution services in São Paulo demonstrate a violation of the Constitution. “It is essential that the Federal Court of Auditors, in the exercise of its preventive and control function, adopts measures to avoid the perpetuation of concessions that do not meet the standards required by the legislation,” underlined the opinion of the Deputy Attorney General, Lucas Rocha Furtado.
