The rain fell on Grenade in abundance throughout the day of this Sunday, December 21, and this in the form of snow above 1,200 meters above sea level. This had the main consequence … closure to traffic of 41 kilometers of the A-92 motorway, the main access point between Granada and Almeria.
As confirmed by the 112 emergency service, at seven in the afternoon this road was closed in both directions of traffic between kilometer points 241 and 282. The incidence is increasing since it initially only affected the two access roads to Granada, near the municipality of Huétor Santillán.
The decision was taken by the Civil Guard of Traffic when it was noted that many vehicles were skidding in the section closest to the top of the Port of Mora, at 1,380 meters. It was then ordered to remove the ice with specific equipment for these kilometers and, in the meantime, the occupants of the vehicles had to stay inside.
But the problem increased and a detour was allowed which, on the other hand, is usual when it snows heavily. This is the A-308 motorway, between Iznalloz and Darro. Traffic is heavy on the highway and vehicles are sometimes forced to stop.
Furthermore, the General Directorate of Traffic has indicated that four other roads in the province of Granada remain closed to traffic, all secondary. The busiest is the A-395, which connects the capital with Sierra Nevada. The same measure also concerns the A-337 roads – which cross the Port of Ragua– and the A-4030, also near the Sierra Nevada, although in the latter it is possible to travel with chains.
