On one of the busiest weekends due to end-of-year travel, the governor of the US state of New York, Kathy Hochul, declared an emergency, due to the winter storm ravaging the region. New Jersey is also facing the same situation.
At least 1,500 flights were canceled and another 6,883 were delayed in the northeastern United States, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.
Heavy lake-effect snow buried parts of central New York, making travel difficult as falls of up to a foot were recorded in some cities and even higher totals hit areas east of Syracuse.

In a statement, Hochul said: “I encourage everyone to monitor local weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, plan ahead, drive slowly and allow plenty of time to reach your destination safely.”

Even presenter Ana Maria Braga, who is in New York, posted that the temperature reached -4°C, with a thermal sensation of -6°C.

The National Weather Service issued warnings that the storm would bring “hazardous travel conditions to the Great Lakes, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern New England today through Saturday morning.” In some areas, between 12.7cm and 28cm of snow was expected, according to Sky News.
John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty Airport and LaGuardia International Airport issued snow warnings on social media. Following these warnings, the New York Department of Sanitation prepared 700 million pounds of salt to treat icy roads.
