According to the police report, the soldier said in his statement that he was walking alone along the beach to watch the sunrise, when he was approached by an individual who asked him if the chain he was wearing was gold. Then the suspect hugged him and placed a metal object against his stomach, claiming he was armed and demanding he hand over the chain.
Gomes said he was scared, “afraid of being killed” and handed over his belongings: a gold chain, a watch and his cell phone.
After the robbery, the soldier returned to the apartment where he was staying and took a firearm. He then returned to the beach with the intention of recovering the stolen goods and arresting the perpetrator. The thief noticed the soldier’s presence and fled.
In his testimony, Gomes said he began a chase, ordering the suspect to stop, but the individual continued to flee. At this time, the soldier claims to have fired warning shots with the intention of “scaring him and making him stop”, in the direction of the sea.
As he approached the robber, Gomes reported that the man grabbed an object from his size and, fearing it was a gun, responded by firing a single shot. Later, the soldier realized that it was not a gun, but a knife.
