The city of São Paulo, through Procon, informed the application companies Uber and 99 to clarify possible changes in ride prices in December. Throughout this month, consumers have noticed significantly higher values when using the service. At certain times, in the capital São Paulo, it costs double or even triple.
“The consumer protection organization understands that such behavior may constitute a violation of the principles of transparency, reasonable prices and adequate provision of services,” underlined the municipal management. “The imposition of disproportionate prices, without clear technical or economic justification, may constitute an abusive practice,” he added in a press release.
Uber and 99 must provide clarification
Companies have 10 calendar days, starting December 12, to respond:
- What is the technical and economic justification for adopting dynamic pricing?
- What measures are adopted to avoid price gouging in situations of high demand? Is there a price cap for races? If so, what is its value and how is it applied?
- How and when is the pricing policy communicated to the consumer?
- What internal mechanisms guarantee reasonable prices and avoid disproportionate advantages?
Procon-SP stressed that failure to comply with the notification within the specified period may result in the adoption of administrative measures provided for in the Consumer Protection Code. These include the imposition of fines, temporary suspension of activity and other applicable sanctions.
