An unprecedented investigation by the Instituto Eu Sou da Paz profiled weapons seized across the country’s southeastern region between 2018 and 2023. In the state of São Paulo, of the 68,204 firearms seized during this period, 21% were in the capital of São Paulo.
Shortly after, it was the city of Campinas, in the interior of the state, where 1,897 weapons were seized. In third position, among the 10 cities with the most foreclosures, is Guarulhos, in Greater São Paulo, with 1,361.

São Paulo accounts for nearly 50% of seized machine guns
The study by the Eu Sou da Paz Institute also found that almost 50% of machine guns seized in operations between 2018 and 2023 were concentrated in the state of São Paulo.
The region was responsible for 46.8% of machine gun seizures, a figure possibly influenced by a weapons diversion from an army battalion in Barueri, Greater São Paulo, that occurred in October 2023.
For the executive director of the institute, Carolina Ricardo, the evolution and change in the profile of firearms used in crimes is the result of a relaxation of legislation from 2019, “facilitating access to semi-automatic pistols and more powerful calibers”.
