Four days after the start of the blackout caused by the passage of an extratropical cyclone, almost 200,000 properties are still facing a lack of electricity in the state of São Paulo in the early hours of this Sunday (14).
In the fifth power outage to hit the capital São Paulo and the metropolitan region in just over two years, since November 2023, the total number of people affected is 191.66 in the early hours of Sunday.
In the capital, the outage affects 145,234 customers. Residents who had not yet been affected began reporting a lack of electricity from the early hours of Saturday (13), when a new storm hit the city.
On Friday (12), the São Paulo Justice Court accepted a request from the Public Prosecutor’s Office and gave Enel 12 hours to restore electricity to all customers in its São Paulo concession area, under penalty of an hourly fine of R$200,000.
Despite their determination, city residents still face a lack of energy supply and find alternatives, such as spending the weekend with friends or relatives.
In Artur Alvim, in the eastern zone, for example, Cláudio Andrade and his wife Pamela, in the dark for more than 60 hours, decided to go to Itanhaém, on the coast of São Paulo, to visit their relatives. “It may seem fun, but leaving the house by force is painful,” said Cláudio, a geography teacher at a school a few blocks from his home that is also without electricity.
In a statement, Enel said it was working to restore service and normalize energy supply by the end of Sunday.
