Etna, the highest volcano in Europe located on the Italian island of Sicily, has begun a new eruptive phase with strong explosions in the northeast crater, which released pyroclastic materials and lava flows without, for the moment, interrupting air traffic at Catania airport.
Thanks to the better visibility this Sunday, Etna once again offers spectacular explosions of ashes, smoke and lava flows that we observe among the snow that has fallen these days.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology explained that today “a series of strong explosions began in the northeast crater, projecting pyroclastic material throughout the cone.
Furthermore, “activity has intensified in the vent located on the upper side of another craterproducing a constant source of smoke several tens of meters high”
The lava flow is moving east, towards the Bove Valley, and has traveled a few 1.8 kilometers eastboundthey explained.
On Sunday morning, authorities issued a red alert, indicating a possible risk to planes due to dense smokebut flights at Catania-Fontanarossa airport continued to operate without interruption.
