The two-time defending champions scored 6-0 at AVS SAD at home. Thus, he retains 2nd place. But Porto is still playing the round and could lead again
Sporting beat AVS SAD on the 16th day of the Portuguese Championship. Hosting the last team at Alvalade, they won 6-0. Luis Suárez, Maxi Araújo and Geny Catamo scored two goals each. With this excellent result, Sporting, current double champion of Portugal, reached 35 points, just two behind Porto. There is, however, one detail: the Porto players still play this trick.
AVS SAD continues to sink even deeper, with only three points, being the only team that has yet to win. They are six points behind the penultimate team, have the second worst attack (9 goals) and the worst defense (37 goals). To remember: Benfica, who faces Moreirense this Sunday, is in third place, with 29 points.
How Sporting fought
With a much-changed team compared to the one they lost to Bayern midweek in the Champions League, and with Hojlund on the bench, Sporting started the match creating good chances. From the start, the Lisbon club had obtained a penalty in their favor, but the decision was overturned by the VAR.
Despite everything, Sporting showed great offensive power and went into the break leading 3-0, with three goals scored in the space of five minutes. Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, with a shot from outside the area. At 35, Maxi Araújo went wide after a precise cross from Vagiannidis from the right, finishing in the goalkeeper’s corner. The third goal came in the 37th minute, with Geny Catamo taking advantage of a defensive rebound from a corner to score from outside the box.
At the start of the second half, almost like an assist, Maxi Araújo completed a cross for Vagiannidis on the right. In the eighth minute, Suárez took advantage of a defensive error and, with a placed shot, nearly scored the team’s fifth goal.
Fortunately for AVS (ex-Aves), Sporting reduced the pace, but in the last minutes, Catamo scored again, closing the score and guaranteeing the victory.
