According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), US envoy Steve Witkoff will be in Berlin this weekend to meet with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. The decision to send to Berlin someone who has led talks with Ukraine and Russia on the U.S.-driven peace plan “underscores the accelerated push to narrow differences between Kiev and Washington over the terms of the deal,” writes the WSJ.
A White House official confirmed the accuracy of the report to AFP. According to this American media, the meeting is scheduled to take place this weekend, ahead of the summit convened by Chancellor Friedrich Merz with several European heads of state and government as well as the leaders of the community and NATO institutions, which will take place on Monday.
Some meetings with numerous participants
According to other American media, in addition to Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, also traveled to Germany and was also involved in talks about a peace agreement for Ukraine. It emerged on Friday that the idea of Ukraine quickly joining the EU is already included in the latest version of a US plan to end the war that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
It is understood that French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who together with Chancellor Merz form the so-called “E3” group, will be in the German capital, as well as European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who has excellent relations with Trump, has also officially confirmed his participation in the Berlin summit.
