Mixing the two substances changes a brain system linked to mood and can increase anxiety and difficulty stopping using.
Mixing marijuana and tobacco can cause significant changes in the brain, and these changes help explain why many users feel more anxiety and difficulty giving up consumption. The conclusion comes from a study from McGill University, Canada, published in the scientific journal “Drug and alcohol addiction“, which identified greater activity of an enzyme responsible for the reduction of anandamide, a molecule associated with feeling of well-being and happiness. Researchers looked at a small group of young adults who used both substances and found a different brain pattern than people who only used cannabis.
Understanding what changes in the brain when tobacco and marijuana mix
Typically, smokers mix tobacco and marijuana to facilitate the consumption of certain types of substances, such as hashish, a concentrated product made from resin derived from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant. In other cases, this mixing also takes place with the aim of intensifying the effect of the cannabis or “producing” more. And for many people, this habit ends up becoming a daily ritual.
The big problem is that behind this combination, the the brain undergoes intense chemical variationsin which the substances responsible for mood, stress and even feeling of well-being are directly affected. This is what the study is based on, what actually happens when the two products are mixed.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers evaluated…
