The general coordinator of Movimiento Sumar, Lara Hernández, has defined the verdict of the Supreme Court (TS) against former Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz as “auto de fe”, criticizing that the conviction is “based on mere indications” that he could have been the one who leaked data from Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s partner Alberto González Amador.
“More than a court ruling, you could say it is an auto-da-fé. And that is really problematic in a social law and welfare state, in a democracy like ours, that the Attorney General’s conviction is based on mere evidence,” he claimed.
This was explained in an interview on the TVE program “La hora de la 1”, reported by Europa Press, in which he also praised the government’s “agile” and “swift” response following the resignation of García Ortiz and the appointment of his successor, Teresa Peramato.
Nevertheless, he regretted that the trial of the now former Attorney General was “overly political,” a “sign of the times we live in,” which deals with the “lack of credibility of the Spanish justice system in such delicate moments” as the current one.
Hernández has maintained that this process “is not over yet” and has foreseen that “the truth always finds its way.” “Legal avenues are open for Mr. García Ortiz and I am absolutely convinced that sooner or later the Attorney General’s innocence will be proven,” she concluded.
