US authorities have identified a suspect as part of the investigation into last Saturday’s shooting at Brown University, in which two students died and several were injured, US media reported on Thursday (December 18, 2025).
“Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Brown University shooting, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the case,” CNN reported. CBS News reported similar information.
The shooting occurred on Saturday in a building on the campus of the prestigious university in Providence, Rhode Island, where exams were being held.
The investigators had little available to them during their search. In recent days, they released images of a possible suspect and a person who was near him in an attempt to find them. The search for the fugitive remains unsuccessful.
Nine students injured
The two murdered students were identified as Ella Cook, vice president of Brown’s Republican Association, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, who was originally from Uzbekistan and hoped to become a neurosurgeon.
Nine students were injured in the shooting. Authorities initially arrested a man in connection with the shooting but later released him.
The university faced questions about campus security, including from President Donald Trump, after it was revealed that none of its 1,200 security cameras were connected to the police surveillance system.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an event in which four or more people are injured by gunfire, more than 300 mass shootings have been recorded in the United States since the beginning of the year.
