Estudiantes de La Plata won the seventh Argentine championship this Saturday (13/12), beating Racing at the Torneo Clausura. However, the president of the champion club, Juan Sebastián Verón, was unable to celebrate with the players on the pitch due to a suspension and therefore went to the stands with the supporters.

The reason why Verón was punished happened in November this year. Rosário Central received a trophy for achieving the best performance in the general classification in 2025. This bonus is a novelty, recently introduced by the Argentine Football Federation (AFA).
Estudiantes were not happy with this change, however, as previously only the winners of the Torneo Apertura and the Clausura received prizes. Shortly after, the Pincharratas faced Rosário Central. As soon as the newly crowned team entered the field, the squad of the red and white club turned their backs on them in protest.

AFA punishes Estudiantes after players turned their backs on Rosário Central
In Argentina there is a tradition when a club is champion, called El Pasillo. In which, during the next match, the opponents welcome the winners onto the field in a “corridor”, applauding.
The contrary stance of Estudiantes players led the AFA to sanction the club’s president and captain. Santiago Núñez will not be able to wear the leader’s armband on the field for three months. The Pincharratas were also fined US$4,000 (approximately 21,700 reais).
